Free-space optical systems employing space division multiplexing, such Orbital Angular Momentum (Twisted Light), can potentially provide mobile links that offer network connections at the speed of optical fibre. Many twisted beams of light can be layered over the same free-space point-to-point link to replicate many optical fibres buried in the ground but without the complex infrastructure required to support optical cabling. The engineers in the Structure Photonics Research group are working to use twisted light technology to replace the last-mile networks in our urban environments. Free-space connected cities with optical speeds will allow smart networks that physically self-adapt in a fluid, more naturally evolving way. The future of our interconnected digital society is to break away from the hardwired structure.
