The Internet of the Seas Sets Sail

LPWA Helping to Track Wildlife and Provide Data on Climate Change; University of St Andrews Developing New Smart Tags to Track Seals Using NB-IoT Technology

21 February 2017, London: The University of St Andrews Sea Mammal Research Unit (SMRU) is developing smart telemetry tags using Narrow Band-IoT (NB-IoT) technology to track and monitor the movement of harbour seals and research their population decline. NB-IoT is a Low Power, Wide Area (LPWA) technology that was standardised by the GSMA’s Mobile IoT Initiative and will play a fundamental role in the emerging ‘Internet of the Seas’ by capturing underwater data that will help to monitor climate change.

The new sensors being developed by SMRU will be harmlessly attached to the seals in order to log detailed data on the animals’ behaviour, such as location and dive depth, as well as temperature, salinity and, eventually, underwater sound. Low power devices and networks in licensed spectrum vastly improve wildlife tracking by enabling more efficient tracking tags that are smaller and less intrusive.

SMRU expects to trial the new NB-IoT enabled marine tags later this year. In 2016, it successfully gathered information for analysis from harbour seals in Orkney, Scotland, using machine-to-machine (M2M) technology. Mobile IoT networks have the potential to deliver improvements in mobile coverage and the built-in device modules offer battery life superior to devices reliant on conventional cellular technologies.

“The GSMA is supporting the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals by exploring how mobile technology can be utilised to capture vital information to support wildlife conservation projects around the world, as well as protect the oceans, seas and the species living in them,” commented Alex Sinclair, Chief Technology Officer, GSMA. “The intersection between Mobile IoT technologies and global conservation projects such as this is exciting, timely and powerful and will play a fundamental role in helping to achieve healthy and productive oceans.”

The Internet of the Seas
NB-IoT technology can also be used to support the Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS), a UNESCO programme that coordinates global ocean data from different governance bodies. NB-IoT can help monitor climate change by means of low energy sensors and data relay channels that capture information on the temperature and salinity of the oceans. Combined and standardised with data from other sea monitoring systems, such NB-IoT-derived data will help provide scientists and oceanographers with accurate information on the world’s oceans. Tagging animals with smart tags also helps scientists to use their mobility and diving skills to explore both distant and deep parts of oceans.

“NB-IoT technology is the future of our research and allows us to springboard from the success of our previous work using M2M technology and capture far more detailed data in a much more efficient way,” said Dr Bernie McConnell, Sea Mammal Research Unit, University of St Andrews. “Many species, both marine and aquatic, are under threat. NB-IoT is ideally suited to be a global carrier of animal information that will provide vital data needed to inform and benefit wildlife conservation worldwide.”

SMRU was approached by the Scottish Government to investigate why seals on the east coast of Scotland and the Northern Isles were in serious decline with a 70 per cent reduction over the last ten years. The natural habitat of animals around the world is being impacted by climate change that is disrupting food chains and biodiversity. The research is ongoing but the possible reasons for the decline could be food limitation, disease, aggression from grey seals, predation by killer whales, and poisoning from harmful algal blooms. A crucial element will be in discovering where the threatened seals feed at sea.

The GSMA Mobile IoT Initiative
LPWA networks are a high-growth area of the IoT designed for M2M applications that have low data rates, require long battery lives and operate unattended for long periods of time, often in remote locations. They will be used for a wide variety of applications such as industrial asset tracking, safety monitoring, water and gas metering, smart grids, city parking, vending machines and city lighting. The GSMA’s Mobile IoT Initiative is designed to accelerate the commercial availability of LPWA solutions in licensed spectrum. These licensed standards allow operators to optimise their existing mobile network infrastructure through an upgrade to LTE-M for LTE networks, while NB-IoT can use both 2G and 4G spectrum. It is currently backed by 30 of the world’s leading mobile operators, OEMs, chipset, module and infrastructure companies. The GSMA Mobile IoT initiative is supporting the industry with multiple global pilots with full commercial solutions expected in market later this year.

Mobile IoT at Mobile World Congress 2017
At Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, the GSMA’s Connected Living Programme will host the ‘GSMA Global Mobile IoT Summit’ with leading industry experts on Sunday, 26 February from 13:00 – 17:30. The session will explore how the industry is working together to realise the full potential of Mobile IoT. There will also be a separate session, ‘Mobile IoT (LPWA) – Open for Business’, on Wednesday, 1 March from 13:30 – 15:30 that will provide an opportunity to learn about the latest commercial rollouts, launches and pilots. 20,000 Students From Catalonia and Spain to Attend Spain’s Largest STEAM Event

Barcelona: The GSMA and the Mobile World Capital Barcelona today announced that they are launching the first Youth Mobile Festival Barcelona (YoMo Barcelona) at Mobile World Congress 2017. YoMo Barcelona has been created to inspire young people to pursue education and careers in science, technology, engineering, art/design, and math (STEAM) disciplines. YoMo Barcelona will be held 27 February – 2 March 2017 at Fira Montjuïc.

“We are very excited to be launching the Youth Mobile Festival at Mobile World Congress Barcelona,” said John Hoffman, CEO, GSMA Ltd. “YoMo will bring classroom learning to life for thousands of school children by showing the exciting and rewarding opportunities that are available in the mobile and STEAM ecosystems. This initiative builds on the great work already underway here through the Mobile World Capital’s mSchools programme and will provide an important foundation for Catalan and Spanish students as they map out their future study and career paths.”

“With our continued commitment to enhance our students’ digital skills, we are pleased to be part of this project together with the GSMA and Mobile World Capital Barcelona. YoMo is the ideal setting for students and teachers in Catalonia to experience first-hand the opportunities technology brings to meet the challenges of digital transformation,” said Meritxell Ruiz, Catalán Ministry of Education.

More than 20,000 students from across Catalonia and Spain will come to Barcelona to participate in this engaging four-day showcase of science and technology, which is set to become the largest STEAM event in Spain. Designed for students from 10 to 16 years old, YoMo Barcelona will feature educational exhibits, live theatre shows, interactive workshops, and a wide range of hands-on activities. For educators and administrators, YoMo Barcelona offers the Educational Resources Zone, which includes resources by specific education publishers and online toolkit providers and numerous lesson plans from activity providers. YoMo will also include educator-focused workshops and lectures sharing best practice in STEAM-related professional development, produced in conjunction with the European Schoolnet and mSchools.

YoMo complements and builds on the mSchools programme developed by Mobile World Capital Barcelona in partnership with the Generalitat of Catalonia, Barcelona City Hall and the GSMA. Launched in 2012, mSchools supports students and teachers, effectively integrating mobile technologies into the classroom. During the last school year, more than 24,000 Catalan students participated in the mSchools programme, opening up new ways of teaching and learning that improve achievement and employability in today’s connected world.

YoMo is supported by local, regional, national and European stakeholders, including the Catalan Ministry of Education, STEAM industry organisations, professional institutions, R&D laboratories, not-for-profit charities, universities and other specialist education institutions.

How to Participate in YoMo
YoMo is open to all students and education professionals in Catalonia and Spain and is free to attend. Registration for YoMo will open in October, but potential attendees can indicate interest in advance. More information on YoMo, including how to register interest in attending and to participate in other ways, is available at www.yomobcn.com.

GSMA Announces that the 2017 Glomo Awards are Open for Entry

London: The GSMA today announced that the 2017 Global Mobile Awards (Glomo Awards) are now open for entry. With 39 awards over eight categories, the Glomo Awards celebrate the greatest achievements and innovations across the mobile industry. Entries for the 2017 awards will be accepted through Wednesday, 23 November 2016, with the winners announced at the GSMA Mobile World Congress 2017 in Barcelona.

“Mobile connectivity is fundamental in our everyday lives and has transformed the way we live, work, access essential services and communicate,” said Michael O’Hara, Chief Marketing Officer, GSMA. “The Glomo Awards provide a global platform to showcase the most significant, dynamic and revolutionary innovations that are shaping the future of the mobile industry. We look forward to a wide range of exciting entries for 2017.”

The 2017 Glomo Awards will be presented in the following categories:

  • The Connected Life Awards
  • Best Mobile Services
  • Social and Economic Development
  • Best Mobile Apps
  • Best Mobile Handsets and Devices
  • Best Mobile Technology
  • Government Excellence Award
  • Outstanding Achievement

For 2017, the GSMA has introduced seven new awards that highlight the latest technologies, products and services impacting the mobile industry. The Glomo Awards feature three new awards in the “Best Mobile Apps” category. The first, the “Best Mobile App for the Connected Lifestyle” award, will focus on apps that make users’ lives more efficient, enjoyable, safer and smarter across a range of key lifestyle sectors. A second new award, for “Best Mobile App for Virtual or Augmented Reality”, will shine a light on the best implementation of advanced digital technologies such as virtual reality and augmented reality. The final new addition to this category, the “Best Mobile App for Business” award, will recognise the development of mobile apps that help small, medium or large corporations and enterprise users.

The “Best Mobile Technology” category has also been enhanced with two new awards including “Outstanding Contribution for LTE Evolution to 5G”, an award that recognises the pioneers who are driving the transition from the well-established high-speed mobile broadband services of today to the networks of the future. The second addition to this category is the “Best IoT Innovation for Mobile Networks” award, which will identify new and creative IoT solutions that provide connectivity and services that could not be previously achieved, in either emerging markets or advanced economies.

The Glomo Awards will also celebrate the best examples of mobile connectivity that support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The SDGs provide a 17-point plan to end poverty, combat climate change and fight injustice and inequality, and represent the global community’s most significant undertaking to make the world a better place. The mobile industry has the power to help accelerate this journey, and the “Outstanding Mobile Contribution to the UN SDGs” award will demonstrate real mobile innovations that contribute to any one or several of the challenges set out in the SDGs.

The final new award, for “Best Use of Mobile for Smart Cities”, will recognise transformative and ground-breaking contributions to the evolution of smart cities via the use of mobile technology and connectivity. This award will identify organisations that address specific urban challenges, providing services or cost-efficient solutions for the city or improving the quality of life for citizens and visitors in a tangible and sustainable way.

As always, the Glomo Awards also include the coveted “Government Leadership Award” which aims to recognise world-class government leadership, and the “Outstanding Achievement” category which includes the award for “Outstanding Contribution to the Mobile Industry” and the “Women4Technology – Industry Leadership Award”.
